Do not deride the chickadee, the mockingbird, or the bluegill

I spend much of my time watching the same common birds at my feeder. Chickadees, titmice, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, red-breasted nuthatches—it is more or less guaranteed that I will see any number of these birds each day.

It happened first with chickadees. I’d see one and hear myself thinking—or, unmistakably, saying out loud—it’s just a chickadee.
