We all need a "Fuck off with that" friend. I'm probably more of a rowboat personality, but that whaler is really cool. Even better that it was restored by a loving pair of hands.
I’m definitely a rowboat guy too, but there’s something to be said for covering a lot of water without breaking a sweat. “Fuck off with that” is necessary more often than we think, it’s important to have a friend to express it. Thanks for reading, Nate—even though I know this one isn’t about birds!
Get after those stripers! Spring run beats fall run in my mind, but I have no science to back that up. As they say: Tight lines, Jesse. Thank you for reading.
I like what the Water Rat said to Mole in The Wind in the Willows: “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing–absolutely nothing–half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”
Love this bunches James! Of course you’ll catch fish this year- I’m pretty sure my family owned one of those on our lake in upstate NY. It’s long been sold now,
I’m going to send this to my brother since he too is a fly fisherman. He’s currently in Michigan, and fishes up north in that state, but he also travels for vacation to Montana each year for a week or so. He ties his own flies and has a few rods, I’m not sure if he has the “one”.
Thank you for sending this to your brother, Teyani, and thank you for reading! I've never fished Montana, but I want to badly someday. If your brother ties his own flies, he is likely in touch with the artistry of fly angling.
"Fishing is about the people you fIsh with." And a good friend is a precious gift. I know nothing about fishing, but I really enjoyed this post. Thank you.
Inspiring. It's good to get through a session with 2 fly casters on a 13 with no hook ups, LOL. I love fly fishing as it seems you do too, but there are times when a spinning, casting or trolling set up is the way. Cheers to variety in fishing.
Agreed, sometimes the fly rod just doesn't make sense and it's best to employ other modalities. Lots of fly anglers might look down their noses at other types of rods, I think that's wrong.

Great stuff, James. It's getting me excited to get to the ocean and fish this summer.

I’d never heard that quote! But very apt—especially messing around on a boat that a friend has been working on for months. Thanks for reading.
Wonderful post, James. I really enjoyed learning about the boats in addition to the fishing. A great tribute to friendship here.
Thank you Heidi! It was a great day with a great friend, I appreciate you reading about it.
How wonderful to have a friend like Tommy. Thanks for the introduction. Best wishes in both your fishing adventures.
Wonderful indeed! Hopefully we'll actually catch some fish next time. Thank you.

Yes. It is his restorative peace.

Thank you for reading, Sharron! Fishing is worth a shot if you ever get the opportunity, I am a fierce proponent of the fly rod.

Nice boat and I like the wood finish on parts of your friend's boat, James.
Thank you Neil! A lot of that he redid himself, that boat was getting compliments left and right that day.
I'm a land locked guy but know enough about boats that you can't go wrong with a Boston Whaler. Love the pictures, looks like you had a great time.
Thank you! I've always been partial to whalers. The whaler 13 seems to have a bit of a cult following--understandably so.
Striped bass books will always have a place on my shelf.
If you determine the quality of a fish by the amount of writing it's inspired, the striped bass is of highest quality.
